The Story behind the brand Peter Rabbit
Peter Rabbit made his first appearance in 1902 in The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Peter disobeys Mrs Rabbit's orders and sneaks into Mr. McGregor's garden, eating as many vegetables as he can before Mr. McGregor spots him and chases him about. Peter manages to escape, but not before losing his jacket and shoes, which Mr. McGregor uses to dress a scarecrow. Peter returns home weary, ill, and naked and is put to bed with a dose of chamomile tea. Peter Rabbit is a fictional animal character in various children's stories by Beatrix Potter. He first appeared in The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902 and subsequently in five more books between 1904 and 1912.
Celebrating Beatrix Potter
In 2016 we celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter.
Beatrix Potter is regarded as one of the world’s best-loved children’s authors and illustrators of all time, and has captured our imagination for over 100 years with her beautifully illustrated Tales.
From her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902, she went on to create a series of stories based around animal characters including Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mr. Jeremy Fisher and Squirrel Nutkin. Her humorous, lively tales and beautiful illustrations have become a natural part of childhood.
However Beatrix was far more than a creator of children’s stories – as an artist, storyteller, botanist, environmentalist, farmer and impeccable businesswoman, she was a visionary and a trailblazer. Single-mindedly determined and ambitious she overcame professional rejection, academic humiliation, and personal heartbreak, going on to earn her fortune and a formidable reputation.
Beatrix’s legacy has stood the test of time, and from her scientific sketches to her enduring storytelling, it is a legacy worth celebrating.
